Fox Valley Models HO Scale PC&F R-40-2 Wood Reefer, Pacific Fruit Express/Southern Pacific/PFE

Beginning in the 1870s, railroads developed wooden refrigerator cars to transport perishable products. With insulated sides, the cars were cooled using ice, either crushed or with blocks. Four rooftop hatches at each end opened where ice was loaded into bunkers, which allowed cold air to circulate throughout the car to keep the contents cool. Although steel ice reefers were introduced in 1936, the wood-built cars continued to be common sight throughout the 1950s.

The Fox Valley Models™ is the intersection of value and accuracy, giving modelers quality options to recreate their favorite railroads. Designed to capture the spirit of the prototype, our 40’ Wood Reefer features finely cast stirrup steps, end ladders, and a detailed underbody brake system that enhance the realism of the model. Additionally, factory-applied wire grab irons, accurate friction bearing trucks, and a separate handbrake wheel give this classic freight car an outstanding value.
