The Rivet Counter™ series CM44AC & CM44AH is the definitive HO Scale model of Union Pacific’s modernized AC4400CW locomotives. Our model combines smooth operating performance with unparalleled railroad, road number, and era-specific™ details along with industry-leading LED lighting features.

From late 2019 through 2025, CSX contracted with GE, now Wabtec, to rebuild its aging AC4400CW locomotives. This modernization program included an upgraded control system, wiring, and a high-pressure common-rail fuel system for increased economy and reliability. Externally, multiple changes were also made to the cabs, long hood cabinets, and radiators.

CSX #2026 serves as one of the railroad’s locomotives honoring America’s 250th anniversary.

PROTOTYPE HISTORY

In September 2019, former CSX locomotive number 202 – the first of an initial order of 50 AC4400CW (CW44AC) locomotives to be modernized – rolled out of Wabtec’s Erie, PA, facility for testing. This locomotive, now numbered 7200, was also the first in a new equipment series for CSX. Post-rebuild, GE/Wabtec classified these locomotives as AC4400CWM (“M” for Modernization); however, CSX designates them as CM44AC.

The first 50 modernized locomotives were sorted into two different number series. The 7000 series was assigned to former CW44ACs equipped with GE high-adhesion trucks, while the 7200 series was designated for units with steerable trucks. The heavier CW44AH locomotives were initially assigned to the 7500 series in 2022, but some recent modernized units have been numbered into the 7300 and 7400 series. These locomotives are classified as CM44AH.

Internally, the most significant changes involve the upgraded control system and wiring. GE introduced what it called the “Consolidated Control Architecture,” which Wabtec later rebranded as “Modular Control Architecture.” This system works in conjunction with the “FDL Advantage,” which optimizes the turbocharger by replacing the previous 16 individual fuel pumps with a single high-pressure common rail fuel system. These improvements have increased fuel efficiency by up to 18% and enhanced reliability.

Externally, several significant changes are noticeable. The most obvious modification is the upgraded ET44-style cab. These new cabs can be identified by the nose door, now located on the engineer’s side instead of the fireman’s side, as seen in earlier cabs. Additionally, the original low-mounted number boards on CSX’s previous cabs have been relocated above the windshields. The cab side windows have also changed from a three-window configuration to a larger four-window design.

Behind the cab, all cabinets up to the engine compartment were replaced with ones more closely resembling those found on ET44 GEVOs. These include new dynamic brake, inverter, and inertial cabinets and components. Capacitor boxes were also removed from any units that originally had them positioned next to the inverter cabinet.

All locomotives retained their original engine and radiator compartments. However, the radiator section was upgraded with a raised shutter appliance to supplement the existing cooling system. These shutters can open or close to retain heat when necessary or vent excess heat as needed.

Throughout the rebuild program, CSX has made several changes to locomotive branding. All modernized units have been repainted in the Yellow Nose 3 (YN3) scheme, but the logos have evolved. From 2019 through 2021, the rebuilt locomotives received the boxcar logo, also known as the YN3b scheme. In 2021 and 2022, locomotives were instead given the standard CSX logo, representing the traditional YN3 scheme. Since 2022, CM44AC and CM44AH locomotives have been adorned with the "Dot Com" logo, which defines the YN3c scheme.

In 2022, CSX began testing 10 locomotives using a 20% soybean oil-based fuel blend known as B20 biodiesel. It is claimed that burning this fuel reduces emissions by up to 20%. These test locomotives received special Biodiesel and test partner logos on either side of the cab nose after delivery. CSX conducted this test out of Tampa, Florida, throughout 2022, and today, these locomotives can be seen operating across the CSX system.

Through these modernization efforts, the highly successful AC4400CW locomotives will continue to play a vital role in the railroad industry for many more years under their new designations: CM44AC and CM44AH.
