Rivet Counter HO Scale Trinity RD-6 Coal Hopper, BNSF/Heritage III
Ortner Freight Car developed the rapid-discharge door system in the early 1960s for unit coal trains, with widespread adoption following Georgia Power’s use of the design. By 1980, Ortner had built 10,000 cars before being acquired by Trinity Industries in 1986, which continues to refine the system. Introduced in 2003, the 4,207-cubic-foot RDVI open hopper features aluminum construction with a steel underframe and a field-adjustable door system designed for durability, easy maintenance, and reduced coal dust leakage.
