Operator N Scale Pullman-Standard Silverside Coal Gondola, Norfolk Southern/Southern High Claytor Lettering
Southern Railway’s “Silversides” were built from 1959 through the early 1960s, with 750 total. They were lightweight aluminum cars and could carry up to 100 tons of western Virginia coal for plants in Alabama and North Carolina. They wore Vermillion-colored lettering, initially, and some were re-lettered in green later on. When Norfolk Southern was formed in 1982, nearly all remained in service. Most were re-lettered with NS logos in the late ‘80s. The cars remained in service until the mid-2000s and retired after over 40 years of dedicated service.
Used throughout their careers in unit train service, these cars are must-haves for Southern and Norfolk Southern Railway modelers. The Operator™ N Scale P-S Silverside Coal Gondolas feature a detailed underframe, separately applied brakewheel, etched metal crosswalks, optional interior bracing, optional side bracing (both modeler applied), along with body-mounted semi-scale knuckle couplers (Micro-Trains® compatible), and ASF Motion Control Trucks with finely rendered raised foundry data.
