Fox Valley Models HO Scale N&W Class J 4-8-4, Norfolk & Western/Excursion/1980-1990s
Between 1941 and 1950, Norfolk & Western Railway built 14 total J Class 4-8-4 steam locomotives at the company’s East End Shops in Roanoke, Virginia. As the most powerful 4-8-4 type ever designed, they were built to pull prestigious passenger trains in the 1940s and ‘50s. Later, they were transitioned to freight service before retirement in October 1959. All were scrapped except for 611, which now resides at the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Restored twice, it featured in Norfolk Southern Railway's steam program from 1982 to 1994 and later in the 21st Century Steam Program. It now operates as a traveling exhibit, occasionally pulling excursions on host railroads.
The Fox Valley Models™ HO Scale N&W J Class 4-8-4 Steam Locomotive is available with ESU LokSound™ 5 for the first time with 2 speakers for Hi-Fi sound. In addition to improved sound quality, our model features numerous LED lights. We’ve also included the ESU PowerPack to keep your J rolling over dirty tracks. Its diecast body provides adequate weight for pulling power and with a 5-pole skew wound motor, will easily handle heavy trains. The model’s driving wheels are perfectly synchronized with our puffing smoke unit (DCC only) and the tender features a real coal load. The handrails, posts, and class lights are nickel-plated and there are sliding cab roof vents to keep your train crew cool as they travel at track speed. Printed and lettering is razor sharp with the builder’s plate legible.
